If you told me five years ago that artwork of mine would be included in a beautiful, locally-made planner, I would've laughed in your face! It seems such a far-fetched thought - having the courage to create something, to then actually submitting it and seeing where that will take you. And here we are, the day of the launch of the 2022 Creativ and Heart planner!
Looking back, this is the second year running where local artists are called to submit artwork to be included in the planner. In 2020, I gave it a go and submitted a floral piece that wasn't chosen. While I was a little disappointed, my numbers brain gave it some perspective. There are only 12 spots to fill in the planner for each month's cover. And obviously, if more than 12 creatives submit artwork, there are bound to be a few sad artists. And rejection seems to be the name of the game in this creative world.
"It's okay", I thought. But also, it got me thinking as to why I even bother putting myself out there, sharing my love for getting creative and sharing the things I paint, illustrate or hand letter. And you know what, it isn't really for the outsider's approval (though guarding one's heart from it is a daily challenge) but the pure joy and gift the Lord has given me to be creative! How special and precious that is, in and of itself.
So, it is in that spirit that I continue to do this creative thing. A way for me not only to relax at night or share something thoughtfully made for someone else but to worship the true Creator and give Him praise for this journey.
When it was announced that the 2022 planner was going to be made, and the artist sign-ups were open, I decided to give it a go yet again. Just to have some fun, taking guidance from the "gather" theme, seeing how that resonated with me and how I could translate something onto the blank page. Taking the courage to submit once again may have felt slightly daunting, but it also felt a little lighter than the previous year. I mean, honestly. What is the worst thing that could happen? Other than them saying "no", of course?
I remember receiving the email on a Saturday, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the pre-text of the email which had "Hooray" in it! My art piece. Got chosen. To be with 11 other crazy talented creatives?! It's insane, and I still can't believe it really. This creative journey is such a wild ride, and I am so grateful to God for the rad opportunities I have been afforded with Carlita Hearts. Praise Him!
